Breve Curriculum Vitae

FRANCISCO JOSÉ BALTÁ-CALLEJA se licenció en Ciencias Físicas por la Universidad de Madrid en 1958. Inició su labor investigadora en la Universidad de la Sorbona, París, en el campo de Resonancia Magnética Nuclear de líquidos orgánicos. En 1962 se doctoró en Física en el H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory, por la Universidad de Bristol; trabajando sobre la cristalización y morfología de nuevos sistemas polimericos. En 1963 se incorporó como Profesor Adjunto de Electricidad y Magnetismo en la Universidad de Madrid. Ha trabajado como investigador y profesor invitado en diversos centros internacionales: Max-Planck Institut de Berlin, el Research Triangle Institute de Carolina del Norte, USA, el. J. J. Thompson Physical Laboratory de la Universidad de Reading , en las universidades de Ulm y Hamburgo (Alemania) en la de Leeds (Inglaterra), Shizuoka (Japón), etc.

En 1970 fue nombrado Investigador del CSIC. Inició el grupo de investigación en Física Macromolecular, es Profesor de Investigación vinculado y ha sido Director del Instituto de Estructura de la Materia (1986-2003) y Director del Centro de Física "Miguel Catalán" (1996-2003). Ha dirigido numerosas tesis doctorales. Su labor investigadora sobre la estructura, morfología, fenómenos de difracción y propiedades físicas de polímeros, aleaciones polimericas, materiales compuestos y nanolaminares han dado lugar a más de 395 publicaciones en revistas internacionales.

Es autor de los libros “The X-ray Scattering of Synthetic Polymers”, Elsevier (1989) y “Microhardness of Polymers”, Cambridge Univ. Press (2000) y ha editado junto con el Prof. Z. Roslaniec el libro “Block Copolymers”, Marcel Dekker, Inc. (2000), y en colaboración con el Prof. G.H. Michler los libros “Mechanical Properties of Polymers based on Nanostructure and Morphology” Taylor and Francis, Inc. (2005) y “Nano- and Micromechanics of Polymers: Structure modification and improvement of Properties” Carl Hanser Verlag, München (2012), pp. 1- 563.

Ha sido vocal de la Comisión Científica del CSIC (1981-1984) y miembro de la Junta de Gobierno de dicho Organismo (1982-84 y 1996-2001). Pertenece a la American Physical Society (desde 1967), a la Materials Research Society (desde 1986) a la Real Sociedad de Física, etc. Ha sido Presidente del grupo de Física de Estado Sólido de la Real Sociedad de Física (1988-92) y Chairman del 'Macromolecular Board' de la European Physical Society (1994-2000).

Le han sido concedidos el Premio Alexander von Humboldt de Investigación Científica, el Premio DuPont de Investigación Aplicada, el Premio de la “Society of Polymer Science”, Japón (2005) y la Cruz de la Orden del Mérito de la República de Polonia (2005). Es miembro del Comité Editorial de diversas revistas internacionales: Journal of Polymer Engineering, Journal of Macromolecular Science-Physics, International Journal of Polymeric Materials, Journal of Applied Polymer Science y de e-Polymers. Ha sido miembro del Scientific Advisory Comité (FBS) del HASYLAB-DESY (Sincrotrón de Hamburgo), es Académico correspondiente de la Real Academia de Ciencia y Artes de Barcelona y miembro del Consejo Rector de la Sociedad de Estudios Internacionales. Recientemente ha sido nombrado miembro Honorario de la Academia Alemana de Innovaciones en Materiales Polimericos de Merseburg (2008).
